Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump Problems

As with any product, rotary vacuum pumps can come with their fair share of issues. Here are some of the most common issues, why it’s causing the said issue, and what to do to fix it:

Pump Will Not Start

  • The pump not starting can be caused by a number of issues. The main issue is that the pump isn’t connected properly. If this is the case, connect it the proper way and try again.
  • If the motor protection switch isn’t set properly, it will not start.
  • The operating voltage may not match the motor. If this is the case, replace the motor.
  • If the oil temperature is below 53.6 degrees Fahrenheit, you need to heat the pump or the pump oil or use a different oil grade.
  • If the oil is too vicious, change the oil to the correct grade.
  • If the exhaust filter or line is clogged, replace, or clean it.

Pump Isn’t Reaching Ultimate Pressure

  • If the gauge is unsuitable, use the correct one.
  • If there is an external leak, check the pipe fittings. If they are loose, tighten them.
  • If the float valve isn’t closing, repair the valve.
  • If there isn’t enough lubrication due to the oil being contaminated, having a clogged oil filter or line, then you have to change the oil, replace the filters, or clean the oil line and casing.
  • If there are dirty vacuum lines, clean them.
  • If there is a low pump capacity, check the required capacity, and replace the pump if it needs to be.

Pressure Rises Too Quickly Once pump Is Switched off

  • There may be a system leak
  • The anti-suck back valve is malfunctioning and needs to be repaired.

Low Pumping Speeds

  • If the dirt trap in the intake port is clogged, clean it out.
  • If the exhaust filter is clogged, install new filter elements.
  • If the connecting lines are too long or narrow, use bigger ones and shorter lines.
  • If the anti-suck back valve is difficult to open, check the springs.

How A Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump Works

A rotary vane vacuum pump is a type of positive displacement pump. It has various parts such as housing, rotor, vanes, inlet valve, and the working chamber inside the housing. The rotor and vanes separate the working chamber into two compartments, each having variable volumes.

When the rotor turns, gas goes into the suction chamber and is then sealed off by the second vane. The gas that has been trapped will become compressed until the outlet valve opens due to atmospheric pressure. Since the valve is oil-sealed, when it opens, a small amount of oil will make its way into the chamber. It will then seal and lubricate the vanes against the housing.

The operating fluid, or pump oil, performs multiple tasks in a rotary vane pump. It is responsible for lubricating the moving parts, fills dead volume under the outlet valve and the small gap between the inlet and outlet. It then compresses the vane gaps and the working chamber while ensuring a proper temperature balance through the transfer of heat.

Additionally, there are single and two-stage versions. The two-stage umps have a lower pressure than the single-stage pumps. The gas ballast pumps have a lower pressure as well since the gas is only used at a high-pressure stage.

Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump Advantages & Disadvantages

Rotary vane vacuum pumps are used now more than ever. These are some of the most basic vacuum pumps to obtain when it comes to vacuum technology.

When looking at its advantages and disadvantages, it all comes down to the preference of who is using it and the economic interest of the supplier. Let’s take a look at some of those advantages and disadvantages:

One of the biggest advantages is that they are more robust than screw pumps. This helps lower maintenance costs over some time. They also last longer, generally around 10-15 years before an overhaul is required. They’re also cheaper than screw pumps.

Additionally, most of these can be repaired right on-site if they break down and it can then get back into operation quickly. Lastly, they use far less power than that of a liquid ring pump. They can also obtain a lower vacuum than the liquid pumps, eliminating the booster need for normal operations.

One of the biggest disadvantages to the rotary vane vacuum pump is that they have higher spare parts cost than a screw pump. The oil and filters have to be changed every 2000 operating hours.

Another disadvantage is that there is a bursting disc needed to protect from explosion due to the low design pressure and oil separator material. As far as low-temperature issues go, due to the viscosity increase of oil, heat tracing and insulation is needed.

Lastly, there is a limited range capacity compared to that of a liquid ring pump.

What To Look For When Buying A Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump

There are various kinds of vacuum pumps available, one of which is a rotary vane vacuum pump. Since these vacuum pumps are essential for ensuring certain applications run without issues, there are many things that you should look for before making your final decision.

What Is The Vacuum Depth Required?

The vacuum depth required is one of the main things that you should be considering when choosing a rotary vane vacuum pump. Low vacuum is used to move liquids through filters. The medium vacuum is used for solvent recovery. Medium to high vacuum can be used for plant extracts.

Additionally, high vacuum applications are best for semiconductor industries, optical devices, and more. If the product requires an ultra-high vacuum, this is for space study and certain nuclear reactors.

When you are choosing the vacuum depth and flow rate, consider the impact it will have on your system. If you have a smaller system, you won’t need a larger flow pump. If you have a large system, you will need a larger flow pump. You will need a better flow or you’ll be waiting longer to vacuum the system.

Do You Require or Want Corrosion Resistance? How About Oil?

If you are looking for a product that is going to last a long time, then you may need a corrosion-resistant pump. Additionally, you may also need a dry or oil-free pump. Before you choose one, you have to understand the driving forces that come with the application.

The boiling point of compounds is reduced by the vacuum and heating/stirring evaporated them into vapors. This in turn will turn them into condensation. Condensation causes corrosion. If this is the case, you will want a corrosion-resistant pump.

When it comes to oil-filled rotary vane pumps, these are actually recommended. They create the best vacuum for the price. They can run continuously for long periods and they are durable, easy to manage, and require no additional parts or equipment. Not to mention, they can easily adapt to vacuum pressing.

Single or Two-Stage

Two-stage pumps are going to cost more than a single-stage pump. Additionally, the two-stage design has two vanes and rotors. The first stage is responsible for generating the vacuum and the second stage cleans the system. This creates a deeper ultimate vacuum level. This means that the two-stage pumps produce more of a deeper vacuum than a single-stage.

Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFM)

If you’re wondering whether or not this matters, the answer is yes it does. This is the measure of how many cubic feet per minute of free air the pump will move. If you are operating multiple presses at one time or larger presses, you will want a higher CFM. You can use any 3-CFM or higher pump with all HD presses.
