Our Briggs & Stratton Engines Made in China

They began manufacturing their engines in Milwaukee in 1908. Today, 85 percent of Briggs & Stratton engines are made in the states of Georgia, Missouri, and Kentucky. They use mostly U.S. parts but also get parts from other global regions.

How Long do Briggs & Stratton Engines Last?

If the engines are maintained properly and operated decently, Briggs & Stratton engines can last between 25-30 years. Are you finding that your air compressor is giving you some issues?

Here are some common problems that can arise and how you can fix it to ensure the longevity of your product:

Typical Issues with Briggs & Stratton Engines

Low or No Pressure

If your air compressor isn’t putting out the pressure it’s capable of, there are a few things you should check:

  • Check the ball valve and ensure it’s closed.
  • Check the connections and fittings for leaks. Tighten or reseal, but don’t tighten too much. You can use soapy water on the hose to expose air leaking by the bubbles forming.
  • Check for holes. If the hose is worn or has holes, replace it.
  • Check the amount of air that you are using. If there is too much air being used,  adjust the regulator to decrease the air being used.
  • Check the air requirement. If the requirement is above the CFM and pressure that the compressor is capable of producing, then you may need an upgrade.

The Motor Isn’t Running

If you find that your motor isn’t running, there are a few common problems that are simple to fix:

  • Make sure your compressor is plugged in properly. You should be using a 120v grounded circuit. Make sure the compressor is plugged into the proper outlet. Never modify the plug to accommodate the outlet.
  • The thermal overload protector within the motor may have tripped. You can fix this by turning off the compressor, unplugging the power supply, and waiting until the motor is cooled off.
Once the motor is cool, plug it back in after 5-minutes to ensure the thermal overload protector issue has resolved.
  • Check to see if the relief valve is stuck open. If it’s open, close it.
  • You may have exceeded the tank pressure switch limit. When the tank pressure drops below the specified cut-in pressure, it will automatically start.

Are Briggs & Stratton Engines Reliable?

This is a touchy subject for some. Some people have had bad experiences with Briggs & Stratton engines and people who have had good experiences.

The reliability of your engine is dependent on how well you maintain them. If you beat on them and mistreat them, they’re going to perform poorly.

It’s similar to a car. Take care of it and get the oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles (depending on the type of oil of course) and you’ll have a strong-running engine for years.

Are They Using Their Own Engines on Their Air Compressors or Are They Using Honda motors?

Briggs & Stratton uses their own motors in their products. However, the motor can be replaced with a Honda motor.

If you want a breakdown of Honda vs Briggs & Stratton motors, here it is!

Briggs & Stratton

The Briggs & Stratton motors have excellent air intake systems. They feature an advanced filtration and cooling system.

This system gives the engine a lower running temperature, which can extend its life. Since there are so many engines from Briggs & Stratton on the market, there are some bad eggs and solid engines you can buy.

Honda

Honda engines are more expensive, but they perform better and last longer. Not only that, but they are much quieter and have a silky smooth pull cord.

The downfall of Honda motors is that they don’t tolerate water in the fuel well. The Honda engines also have less horsepower than the Briggs & Stratton engines.

Honda only has three main engines that can be put in Briggs & Stratton products. The GCV 16 & GCV 190 for residential equipment and GXV690 for commercial equipment.

Briggs & Stratton vs Porter Cable Air Compressor

Both Briggs & Stratton and Porter-Cable are well-known and respected companies. They manufacture a variety of products that are used every day around the globe.

One of these products is the air compressor. So what’s the difference between the two brands?

Shape

In terms of shape, if it’s something you consider when buying an air compressor, the two companies are very different.

Porter-cable favors the pancake tank whereas Briggs & Stratton favor the hotdog and vertical tank. However, Porter Cable does have a small selection of vertical tanks.

Price

Both Briggs & Stratton and Porter-Cable are pretty equal in price. Their smaller models are in the same price range as well as their larger models.

Color

If item color matters to you, then you’ll want to pay attention to this. Porter-Cable is red and Briggs & Stratton is black.

2020 Update: Why is Briggs & Stratton Closing?

Briggs & Stratton, although not closing all of their locations, is closing two of their plants and reducing operations at another one.

They have stated that they are closing those plants due to the falling demands for their outdoor power equipment. Their sales decreased by $2.4 million in 2012.

They had plans to consolidate their Newbern, TN, and McDonough, GA plants. They will close the Ostrava, Czech Republic plant as well.

There is also talks of Briggs & Stratton putting a hold on operations at it’s Bluff, MO plant by reducing capacity. The lawn and garden market had declined 33% before these decisions, something that hasn’t been seen in decades.
